The campus was covered in snow for a few days this week, but throughout the snowy weather, many Saint Martin's staff members and departments made sure essential services were available for students. Many thanks to the facilities and custodian crews, @bonappetitsmu, @saintsreslife staff, @smuogradylib staff, rec center staff, public safety staff and the monks! #saintswithheart #saintsalive #pnw #snow Lots of snow here over the past week, which means lots of wonderful snowy photos from campus! Foggy woods: always a good time. #fog #amaturephotography #shotoniphone #iphonephotography #trees #forest Merry Christmas from Saint Martin's University! Abbot Neal Roth, O.S.B. '65 prepared a special reflection to share on this day:

In 1223, near Christmas day, St. Francis of Assisi wanted the people of the town to feel close to the infant Jesus, so he persuaded a friend, John, to help him re-create the Bethlehem scene by bringing in straw, the ox and the donkey and sheep to a cave overlooking the town of Greccio. There Francis did the best he could to recreate that first Christmas. The news of this spread throughout the countryside and people made their way up the rocky hillside in the bitter cold. Francis, as a deacon, sang the gospel telling the story of the first Christmas. He hoped and prayed that the people would fill the empty crib with an image of the new born Jesus. Later, a man reported that he saw Francis, during the Mass, pick up a sleeping infant Jesus from the manger. He understood this to mean that many people had forgotten the child Jesus and that he came to bring life to the hearts of those who saw the crib. Today, the crib and all its characters are seen in many homes and churches as a reminder of the child Jesus--the one who was, later, to bring healing and hope.

In Luke 2: 1-14, we have the familiar story of Mary and Joseph and how they traveled to Bethlehem to participate in the mandatory census. You know the story- no room in the inn. So, a cave was found with straw for bedding and livestock for warmth and company. Mary found herself in labor and ready to give birth.

A lesson for us is that one does not need to be big and important to make Jesus known to others. Nor does one have to have money and material wealth. Sometimes we touch hearts in unseen ways--acts of kindness and generosity, and we are not even aware. We recreate Christmas daily if we bring Jesus to someone’s heart. We are always present to Jesus when we reach out in charity and love to others--beginning in our own homes and emanating out to others. We are always present to Jesus when our hearts are open to others. Only then does he become truly alive in us. Let us be grateful for this day.
