Saints Spotlight: Quinci Flowers '23

Quinci Flowers is an accomplished student in both her academic and athletic careers. She is a member of the track and field team, a former setter for the women’s volleyball team, and is preparing to go to medical school post-graduation. Flowers brings a community-based perspective to everything she does on campus. In continuation of her achievements, Flowers has been elected president of the Black Student Union (BSU) this year.

The BSU, like most clubs on campus, organizes events and promotes student engagement. This focus has only increased under Flowers’ leadership, as the BSU already has a healthy lineup of fun-filled events to come.

On February 23rd, the BSU organized a black entertainment night, including live performances by local musicians, dancers, and entertainers of color for all SMU students to enjoy.

Sometime in late March, the BSU will be organizing an annual cookout on the rooftop patio of Cebula Hall. The main draw of this event will be the myriad of black-owned businesses, from pastry chefs to BBQ smokers, who will be making food for the event.

What all these events have in common lies in their purpose; to bring the SMU community closer together.

When asked about what she hopes to achieve as president of the BSU, Flowers says “I would love to have all students know they have a safe place here within the BSU. I want it to be more like a family. We can say hi, I can ask you how your day was, what's going on with you at school, how's your family. Here at Saint Martin’s, you’re more than just a statistic.”

Flowers is not only an exemplary student in her own right, but she also upholds many of the Benedictine Values upon which SMU bases its approach to education, community building and respect for others. We wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.
