Saint Martin’s University announces 15th cohort of Benedictine Scholars

Saint Martin's University is proud to announce the 15th cohort of Benedictine Scholars. Since its inception in 2012, the Benedictine Scholars Program has fostered a deeper understanding of the Catholic, Benedictine values and heritage that are foundational to Saint Martin's. This year's scholars continue that tradition through their commitment to academic excellence, faith, service, leadership and community engagement. 

The Benedictine Scholars Program cultivates exceptional undergraduate student leaders who embody Benedictine values and inspire positive change at Saint Martin's University. Through the study of the Rule of Saint Benedict, intentional community, faith formation, service and academic achievement, scholars develop the knowledge, character and leadership skills to make a meaningful impact on campus and beyond. Each Benedictine Scholar receives a renewable $10,000 annual scholarship for up to four years, in addition to other financial aid opportunities. 

"We are excited to welcome this new group of Benedictine Scholars," said Patty Lemon, dean of admissions and enrollment. "These students have demonstrated exceptional leadership, compassion and a genuine commitment to serving others. They embody the values at the heart of Saint Martin's, and we look forward to seeing the many ways they will enrich our campus community." 

Faculty and staff from across the University reviewed applications from outstanding students to select this year's cohort. Those chosen distinguished themselves through their academic achievement, leadership experience, service to their schools and communities, and alignment with Saint Martin's Catholic, Benedictine mission. 

The 15th cohort of Benedictine Scholars includes: 

• Harmony Alverio from Damien Memorial School, Kapolei, HI, will major in Psychology 
• Dorien Cano from Rainier High School, Rainier, WA, will major in Criminology and Criminal Justice 
• Irvin Chavez from Mount Tahoma High School, Tacoma, WA, will major in Biology 
• London Kim from Stadium High School, Tacoma, WA, will major in Undecided 
• John Kjos from Mount Rainier Lutheran High School, Tacoma, WA, will major in Exercise Science (Bachelor of Science) 
• Jayden Phair from Yelm High School, Yelm, WA, will major in Nursing 
• Kallie Phon from Kentwood Senior High School, Kent, WA, will major in Computer Science 
• LeeAnn Rosin from Bothell High School, Bothell, WA, will major in Special Education 
• Easton Tomlinson from Bethel High School, Spanaway, WA, will major in Literary Studies 
• Leia Tupper from James Campbell High School, Ewa Beach, HI, will major in Elementary Education 

Nick Coffman, director of campus ministry and staff advisor for the Benedictine Scholars Program, shared his excitement for the incoming class.  

"Each new cohort reminds me of the incredible potential our students bring to Saint Martin's," Coffman said. "These scholars have demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also a desire to lead with humility, compassion and integrity. Guided by the wisdom of the Rule of Saint Benedict and the living tradition of Saint Martin's Abbey, they seek to share the monastery's gifts of prayer, community and service with their peers. The Benedictine Scholars Program challenges them to grow in faith, build meaningful community and serve others with joy. I am excited to accompany them on that journey." 

Throughout their four years at Saint Martin's, the scholars will participate in a unique leadership curriculum centered on Benedictine spirituality and values. Guided by Coffman, faculty and monastic mentors, they will engage in retreats, service opportunities, faith formation and leadership development while serving as ambassadors of Saint Martin's commitment to faith, reason, service and community.
