National Tutor Appreciation Week
I want our tutors to take away that they are making a difference, and it shows every day on our campus and in our community.

Have you met the CSS tutors of St. Martin’s? Do you know their story?
The Center for Student Success (CSS) has 30 tutors, and each one has been carefully selected and recommended by faculty to help SMU students. They undergo rigorous training in topics and methods to help students. The tutors include residential and commuter students, athletes and non-athletes, and traditional and non-traditional students. They come from all schools on campus: Business, Education, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences.
This year, tutors are also taking part in a certification program of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international organization promoting excellence among academic tutors. Upon certification, the Center and our tutors will be recognized as having met the internationally accepted standards and skills for tutoring.
Best of all, they are working to help their fellow students succeed both in and out of the classroom:
- 23 of our tutors cover subject areas including accounting, biology, computer science, chemistry, math, nursing, physics, engineering, and world languages
- 7 are available to support students in writing assignments for any of their classes
- 5 are embedded in math, engineering, and writing classes, collaborating with instructors to support students.
Since the beginning of fall semester, tutors have worked 350 hours combined. Their services are offered face-to-face and online, for both drop-in times and appointments, during weekdays and in the evenings, and on weekends too.
Who better understands what it’s like to be a Saint at SMU than a peer who has walked the same path? Our tutors are dedicated and enthusiastic – the perfect companion for students finding their way through classes.
Please join us October 3rd through 7th in recognizing and appreciating our St. Martin’s CSS tutors. You can show your support by stopping in the Center for Student Success (lower level, O’Grady library) to meet our tutors and say thanks. You might even be able to snag a treat when you come.
