Shining Bright: Tom and Pat Barte’s 60 years with Saint Martin’s University
Saint Martin’s did so much for us; we are happy to give what we can.
- Tom ('68) & Pat Barte
Human relationships, like diamonds, symbolize timelessness and endurance. It is fitting that Tom Barte ’68, is celebrating his 60th Diamond Anniversary of beginning his journey with Saint Martin’s University. This milestone marks the start of a relationship full of deep meaning, significance, and connection for Tom, his spouse, Pat, and their family, which continues to grow today.
Tom’s journey began in 1964 when he left the bustling city of New York for the quieter town of Lacey, WA. The welcoming climate of the monks, faculty, fellow students and the broader community at Saint Martin’s played a crucial role in shaping many facets of his development. Reflecting on his and his peers' challenges, Tom recalls, “We were all in this together, and we knew we would get through this together.”
Tom and Pat’s love story began when they met while working at a catering company in New York during the summer. Their serendipitous connection blossomed into a lifelong partnership. After marrying, they returned to Washington, where they started their careers and family, always supported by the camaraderie and friendship of the Saint Martin's monks and priests. This indelible network helped Tom find a rewarding career in the corrections industry, aligning his talents, skills and education.
Graduation was just the first step toward Tom and Pat’s future. Over the years, they became more involved with the university, supporting its fundraising efforts and events. Tom’s leadership includes serving as the Alumni Board President and traveling out of state to meet potential incoming students and their families.
As the Barte family’s volunteerism increased, so did their philanthropy. With her career in finance and later at The Evergreen State College, Pat learned how to make charitable gifts from their IRAs, maximizing their contributions. “How could you not give through your IRA? It feels like winning on both ends: a gift to charity, fulfilling your Required Minimum Distribution, and not having to pay the taxes on the income,” she says.
Tom and Pat are proud to have helped establish the Fr. John Scott Endowed Scholarship Fund. They continue to support current students through various means, whether driving, supporting campus ministry, athletics, or wherever needed. “Saint Martin’s did so much for us; we are happy to give what we can,” Tom says.
The Bartes’ enduring relationship with Saint Martin’s fosters the welcoming climate that impressed Tom 60 years ago. Like a faceted diamond, Tom and Pat shine their light on education and future leaders, quietly supporting the institution today and into the future.
