Background

Dr. Porter was born and raised in Montana and after starting her academic career studying geochemistry, she switched to what came naturally, mathematics. She has always strived to help students love mathematics and statistics as she does. Following her husband, who had a long career in the army, she studied and taught at various universities and colleges across the country and in Germany.

She has strong interests in statistics and linear algebra. Starting with her Bachelor of Science in pure mathematics, then receiving her first Master of Science in statistics, and completing her education with an Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematics, Dr. Porter has a broad knowledge in several areas of mathematics.

Since joining Saint Martin's in 2000 (then SMC), Dr. Porter became the Dean of the Math and Science Division in 2005. When the College of Arts and Science (CAS) was formed in 2010 by combining the Math & Science Division with The Humanities and Social Science Divisions, she became the Associate Dean of CAS. Following three years in that position, Dr. Porter then became the Faculty Director of Advising before returning to a faculty-only position in 2014. Her passion is teaching and helping students and colleagues, as can be seen by this progression of service. Through all these positions she still always taught mathematics, trying to show her students that mathematics can be fun and worthwhile.
