Help us maximize your success in mathematics courses at Saint Martin’s by finding out which math courses fit you best.

Math placement is now open for new students entering Saint Martin’s University in the summer or fall semesters of 2020. All testing must be completed by midnight on Aug. 24, 2020 (one week before classes begin in the fall on Aug. 31, 2020).

If you are an undergraduate at Saint Martin's taking the test for the first time, go to and follow these instructions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Regular undergraduates at Saint Martin’s take the math placement exams at a different web location than applicants to the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA). If you fail to use the correct website, your math placement exam scores will be invalidated and you will be required to take any future math placement exams in a proctored environment on campus at predetermined times. If you are an applicant to the MSSA program, please see special instructions for math placement testing under application requirements on the MSSA page.

  1. Click create an account.
  2. Enter your legal first and last name in the first two fields. The display name will fill in automatically for you when you have entered the appropriate information in the first two fields. In the student ID field, enter your 10-digit Saint Martin’s University student ID (P000******). In the user login field, type in your legal first name (all lower case), a period, and your legal last name (all lower case). In the email field, enter your Saint Martin’s e-mail address. Please make sure to enter this email address correctly.  (If you do not enter the correct ID number or correct email address, you will invalidate your ability to re-test math placement later.)
  3. Choose a password, enter it in the password and confirm password fields. Choose something you will easily remember. (If you do not remember your password, you will be unable to re-test math placement later.)
  4. Click submit. Once your registration has been accepted, you will be taken back to the original login screen, where you must now log in with your new user name and password. Click log in.
  5. Click enroll in a class and you should see only one option at this time. Check the box to the left of New Students 2020-21, then click register.  A new window will appear, asking you to confirm that you wish to register. Click confirm.
  6. Another new window will appear indicating that you are enrolled in New Students 2020-21. You are now ready to begin the process, or you may log out and return later. When you are ready to begin, on the homepage, click on the class name New Students 2020-21. Read the instructions on the website and begin the exams. You do not have to take all three exams in one sitting.  In fact, we encourage you to take a break between exams, but all three placement exams (if you are eligible to take all three) should be completed at least one week prior to registering for any Saint Martin’s University mathematics course.

  • Do I have to take a math placement exam?

Yes.  All incoming students must take the math placement exams EXCEPT in the following circumstance:

    • You have already earned transferable college credit in a math course equivalent to one at Saint Martin's which also satisfies the math requirements of your intended major (or serves as a prerequisite to those needed for your major).
    • You have passed the AP Calculus AB exam with a score of 4 or better.
    • You have passed the AP Calculus BC exam with a score of 3 or better.

Please note that any student can take COR 130: Quantitative reasoning or applied mathematics, MTH 110: Math in modern society or MTH 100: Math lab without taking the math placement exams. Please talk to your academic advisor to find out if either of these courses suit your needs.

  • When must I take the exam?
    • At least one week before summer or winter orientation. For students starting Saint Martin’s during summer or fall 2020, testing will open on March 30, 2020 and close on Aug. 24, 2020.
    • If you miss summer or winter orientation, you must still take the exam one week before you plan on registering for classes and/or one week before the beginning of the semester.
    • If you are re-taking the math placement exam, please see the instructions below.
  • How do I re-take the exam?

Students must obtain permission from the math placement director to re-take a math placement test. You may contact the math placement director at

A student may qualify for a re-take if there was a technical problem with his/her exam (such as internet connectivity issues) or with his/her ability to take the exam.

A student may only re-take a math placement exam once per semester.  In the fall semester, two re-takes are offered: one on study day and one on the day before the start of the spring semester.  In the spring semester, one re-take is offered on study day.  In the summer semester, several re-takes are offered: one during each orientation session and one on the day before the start of the fall semester.

Upcoming re-takes will be held on the following dates:

    • Monday, Aug. 17, 2020, 1 p.m.  (proctored through an online format)
    • Sunday, Aug. 30, 1 p.m. (proctored in-person on main campus with COVID precautions in place), Harned Hall 109

You may register for one of the above options by sending an email to the math placement director at

Once a student has taken any Saint Martin's math placement exam or any college course equivalent to a Saint Martin's course, any math placement exam is considered a re-take.

  • How long are math placement scores valid?

Math placement scores are rendered invalid under the following circumstances:

    • After four years.
    • If the student takes any math course or pre-requisite math course that she/he is placed into, but subsequently fails with a grade below a C-.

In either of the above circumstances, the student may be required to re-take any or all of the math placement exams.
