FAQs

Yes.  All incoming students must take the math placement exams EXCEPT in the following circumstance:

  • You have already earned transferable college credit in a math course equivalent to one at Saint Martin's which also satisfies the math requirements of your intended major (or serves as a prerequisite to those needed for your major).

  • You have passed the AP Calculus AB exam with a score of 4 or better.

  • You have passed the AP Calculus BC exam with a score of 3 or better.

Please note that any student can take COR 130: Quantitative reasoning or applied mathematics, MTH 110: Math in modern society or MTH 100: Math lab without taking the math placement exams. Please talk to your academic advisor to find out if either of these courses suit your needs.

  • At least one week before summer or winter orientation.
  • If you miss summer or winter orientation, you must still take the exam one week before you plan on registering for classes and/or one week before the beginning of the semester.
  • If you are re-taking the math placement exam, please see the instructions below.

Nope.

Students must obtain permission from the math placement director to re-take a math placement test. You may contact the math placement director at mathplacement@stmartin.edu.

A student may qualify for a re-take if there was a technical problem with his/her exam (such as internet connectivity issues) or with his/her ability to take the exam.

A student may only re-take a math placement exam once per semester.  In the fall semester, two re-takes are offered: one on study day and one on the day before the start of the spring semester.  In the spring semester, one re-take is offered on study day.  In the summer semester, several re-takes are offered: one during each orientation session and one on the day before the start of the fall semester.

Upcoming re-takes will be held on the following dates:

  • Friday, April 26, 1 p.m., Harned Hall 109 (Study day)

You may register for one of the above options by sending an email to the math placement director at mathplacement@stmartin.edu

Once a student has taken any Saint Martin's math placement exam or any college course equivalent to a Saint Martin's course, any math placement exam is considered a re-take.

Math placement scores are rendered invalid under the following circumstances:

  • After four years.

  • If the student takes any math course or pre-requisite math course that she/he is placed into, but subsequently fails with a grade below a C-.

In either of the above circumstances, the student may be required to re-take any or all of the math placement exams.
