August 7, 2023

After the resignation of president Jennifer Bonds-Raacke, the university board of trustees unanimously named Fr. Kilian Malvey, OSB, to the role of acting president of Saint Martin’s University.

Originally from New York City, Fr. Kilian came to Saint Martin’s as a high school student. He entered Saint Martin’s Abbey and made his profession of vows in 1958. After studying theology at Heytrhop College in London, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1973 by Archbishop Connelly of the Archdiocese of Seattle. He has taught in the high school and university, as well as served as the school’s dean of students, director of campus ministry, resident director, director of the university’s Benedictine Institute, and has served as chair for both Religious Studies and English departments. He continues to serve as the junior master for our abbey’s temporarily professed monks.

May 10 is the feast day of St. Damien of Molokai, the apostle to the lepers and outcasts of nineteenth-century Hawaii. Today, Br. Damien-Joseph Rappuhn, OSB (who takes his name from both Father Damien and Brother Joseph Dutton), celebrates his namesday while finishing up semester exams at Mount Angel Seminary. Pray for him as he continues his journey towards priesthood, especially for the intercession of St. Damien, by whose example we all may learn to seek out those on the margins and overcome our aversion to the suffering of others.

Today (May 1) is unofficially Religious Brothers Day, celebrated on the occasion of the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Did you know that we have 12 religious brothers in our community? As Benedictine monks, whether priest or brother, our first vocation is to our brotherhood—our monastic life of regular prayer, friendship in community, and work in the Lord's vineyard—and our brothers form the backbone of all of this. If you see one of our brothers today, ask him about his vocation! And pray for our community to grow in vocations and to receive more brothers. There is so much good work to be done! As our Lord said, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38) ... See MoreSee Less
