We are committed to fostering an inclusive community in which every Saint is valued and respected. Our core themes and values are rooted in our Catholic, Benedictine heritage. Every student, faculty, and staff brings a sacredness and uniqueness that makes us who we are. We are our community.
What is ARC?
The Saint Martin’s University Accountability, Responsibility, and Community Team (ARC) is a group of selected University community members appointed by the President to monitor and address incidents of conflict to help Saint Martin’s live out its meaning and practice of community.
Information shared in the report will be held in the strictest of confidence and will only be used for ARC purposes.
Please know that this form is not monitored 24/7. If there is an emergency or imminent threat to anyone’s personal safety, please call 911 and then notify Public Safety at 360-438-4555.
For questions or concerns, please contact the Chief Dignity Officer, John Hopkins, at 360-486-8847.
Help us transform our community
Persons who experience incidents of conflict are encouraged to report the incident through the ARC Report form. The form will be reviewed, and a member of the team will follow-up with the complainant(s) to discuss the process, keep them informed of action taken, and direct them to appropriate campus resources. All reported incidents of conflict will be taken seriously and handled with care and compassion for all involved.
Purpose of the ARC
Saint Martin’s University is committed to educating the whole person in their ongoing journey of becoming. We inspire members of our community to lead and serve others and promote the common good. The university stresses the importance of peace, hospitality, and justice, not only as values to realize in our daily lives, but as ways to strengthen community living. We strive to create learning environments in which each person—created in the image and likeness of God—can thrive and succeed, where each person feels heard and valued, and their dignity is affirmed.
The ARC Response System (Accountability, Responsibility, and Community) was created to respond to concerning incidents of conflict in a restorative justice manner and assist in the healing of harm stemming from such conflict. ARC does not seek punitive strategies against community members. Instead, ARC encourages us to follow the Rule of St. Benedict when it calls us to listen deeply to one another with the ear of our heart. Our Benedictine charism holds justice and community as foundational pillars for monastic living. Striving for accountability reflects our shared responsibility to listen deeply to others and build a peaceful and hospitable learning environment. ARC embodies these Benedictine values and aims to fulfill the following:
- Foster a healthy campus climate where community members deepen the skills to resolve conflict and promote the flourishing of each person.
- Encourage dialogue around challenging and difficult issues related to community living, dignity, and justice.
- Promote a campus culture in which all feel supported and welcomed as members of the university community.
- Restore the relationship where personal narratives are heard, the institution acknowledges these narratives and takes accountability for them.
