Summer Creative Writing Institute

"Writing Fiction" with internationally acclaimed novelist Jim Lynch

Writers of all ability levels are welcome to apply for the chance to spend a week on Saint Martin’s Lacey campus with award-winning author Jim Lynch (The Highest Tide, Truth Like the Sun, Border Songs, Before the Wind) to study the craft of writing fiction and to gather inspiration with a community of writers for your next creative endeavor.

Jim Lynch is is a Washington native and author of several highly regarded novels set in Western Washington. He will lead the week-long workshop, June 10-16. He will present in the mornings on such topics as developing character, dialogue and setting; creating realism, humor and emotion; and selling good fiction through the discipline that comes with being a writer. In the afternoons, Lynch will meet individually with institute participants to talk about their writing. Other activities include evening presentations from local writers, special writing workshops, and blocks of writing time to work on your craft.

  • Complete and submit the application (see below) by May 15 for priority consideration. You will need to include/upload a prepared writing sample of three to five pages. Application submission ends once we reach maximum enrollment.

  • Admission is selective, with 15 spaces available for the Writing Institute

  • Applicants will receive a response about their admission status within two weeks of application. If you have already applied and been admitted, you can complete your registration form here.

  • The cost is $1145 residential, which includes room and board, or $990 non-residential. Participants are encouraged to reside on campus during the institute. (Note: No refunds will be given after May 29, 2018.)
