The following is a letter Athletic Director Bob Grisham sent to the Saint Martin's community in response to reports of a racist social media post by a Saint Martin's student athlete.
Earlier this week, we learned of reports that there had been a racist image posted by a Saint Martin's student on social media. The student was identified to be a member of the Saint Martin's men's soccer team.
"I've spoken with Coach Rob Walker, the men's soccer head coach," said Athletic Director Bob Grisham. "We are in agreement that the image and actions surrounding the post are unacceptable. The student has admitted to making the post and as a result he has been dismissed from the team.
"Postings of this kind are not in keeping with the core values and mission of the university or the Saints athletic program and will not be tolerated by any student representing a Saint Martin's athletics team."
The social media post remains the subject of an active conduct investigation, in accordance with the Student Conduct Code in the Saint Martin's University Student Handbook. Given the seriousness of the situation, President Roy Heynderickx has directed that the investigation be expedited.
As a Catholic, Benedictine university, we must remain vigilant towards our values -- which include listening, respect for others, peace and justice -- and steadfast in our opposition of prejudice and in opposition of hate. We do not tolerate hate speech, racism or white supremacy, in any form. We will continue to work together to create a campus where everyone feels heard and everyone feels safe.
