College of Education and Counseling

Priority deadlines

SessionDeadline
Fall semesterMarch 1st
Spring semester3rd Monday in October

The MAC program currently follows a three-year cohort model. Cohorts start in the fall. There is an option to start in the spring with a single class. No new students are admitted in the summer. Note that exceptions to the above deadlines may be made at the discretion of the program chair.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program is based on the following factors:

Academic background

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is required of candidates for admission into the MAC program. Undergraduate coursework in psychology, social work, family studies, or other related fields is desirable, though not required.

The MAC program does not require GRE or MAT scores for admission. Documentation of academic background and grades are taken from official transcripts. Official transcripts are required from every college and university students have attended, even those where only one or two classes were completed. "Official transcripts" are usually defined as any sealed transcript that comes directly from the degree-granting institution, bearing the institution’s seal and the official signature of the registrar. Unsealed transcripts (i.e., transcripts opened by the student) or photocopies of official transcripts do not meet this criterion.

International students must submit proof of English proficiency in one of two ways:

  • An undergraduate degree from a U.S. institution where English is the language of instruction
  • Or an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score report (less than 2 years old) sent directly from the testing agency.
  • We require a 79 IBT/213 CBT/550 PBT on the TOFEL or 6.5 band score on the academic version of the IELTS.

Those students who do not meet the minimum required English proficiency but are otherwise admissible will be conditionally admitted through our ESL program.

Clinical experience

Clinical experience in a reputable counseling facility (as a volunteer or as a paid position) will be supportive of admission into the MAC program. Clinical experience may have been obtained from a variety of sources including, but not limited to:

  • Experience as a staff member in counseling facilities
  • Work in community mental health agencies
  • Other governmental agencies or programs (such as adoption agencies or detention centers)
  • School counseling programs (such as a school counselor, interventionist, Head Start teacher, etc.)
  • Religious counseling facilities or ministries
  • Work in a crisis clinic

In the past, some applicants to the MAC program have been accepted despite limited clinical experience. This occurs when the applicant demonstrates rich life and/or cultural experiences, maturity, and excellence in other important areas. In such cases, students may be asked to obtain some experience in the field or to complete some volunteer work prior to and/or concurrent with the first few semesters of the MAC program.

Application Essay

All applicants need to submit a 500-750-word essay describing:

  • What has prepared you for the field of counseling (as opposed to psychology, social work, or another helping field)?
  • What makes you uniquely oriented to do the work of a counselor?
  • What about counseling are you passionate about?
  • What excites or inspires you to engage in the academic and life-long learning required to be successful in the MAC Program and the profession of counseling?

This essay is intended to be an introspective, autobiographical description. It should be specific enough to provide the reader with a concrete sense of the applicant’s personal, professional, and intellectual development as it pertains to work and study in counseling. When writing this essay, it is appropriate to address personal issues and challenges as well as personal experiences with counseling.

There is no problem with applicants having honest questions about future academic or employment goals. Please demonstrate thought and planning regarding aspirations, even if these aspirations are tentative at this time.

Readiness for the profession

A key element in the journey of the counselor in training is working with the deeply human “person of the counselor” as it is impacted, invoked, challenged, and revealed in the engaging work of counselor education. Personal history, even deeply challenging personal history, may impact but will not necessarily preclude effective work with clients for the student who has reached a state of enough readiness around those issues. Indicators of readiness include the ability not only to be aware, but to effectively respond to personal issues, all the while being able to prioritize effective client care.

The MAC program recognizes that many of those drawn to this work have learned firsthand the transformative power of healing from history. Students should be able to demonstrate readiness, and the ability to maintain a commitment to personal, relational, and professional responsibility around those elements.

For areas of any potentially significant concern, it is recommended that at least one letter of reference speaks directly to the specific area of potential concern and affirms what is seen as that readiness, and why. For example, address of such issues through education and personal counseling or other healing work may be considered a strength in the prospective counselor.

The person of the counselor

The MAC program deeply values the development of the “person of the counselor.” During the admissions process, considerable attention is placed on applicants’ embodiment of the following:

  • Ability to work with abstractions and applications of theory
  • Ability (or potential) to move fluidly between theory and practice
  • Capacity for compassion and ability to be warm, enthusiastic, and nurturing
  • Acceptance of others, appropriate social skills, and excellent people skills
  • A tendency toward, and desire for, personal growth and enrichment
  • Psychological self-awareness and emotional groundedness
  • Clarity of purpose and ability to be self-directed and self-motivated
  • Non-discriminatory and non-ethnocentric attitudes and behavior
  • Emotional maturity and readiness (this is not the same as "age")

How to apply

The following application materials are required for entrance into Saint Martin's University and the MAC program. Applications are not reviewed until all materials have been received.

Step 1: Complete the online application for graduate admission

Step 2: Submit all remaining supplemental / supporting documents (including MAC supplemental application) to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended sent directly from the institution to Graduate Admissions
  • Up-to-date CV/resume, no more than two pages in length, representing your most recent education and work history
  • A minimum of two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation would ideally be from previous academic professors who can comment on your potential for success in graduate level work and attributes that support future effectiveness as a counselor. If unable to secure academic letters of recommendation, letters of recommendation from professional/employment supervisors who are able to speak to the attributes that support your future effectiveness as a counselor and possibly your leadership or your followership will be accepted. Please be sure to communicate with your recommender that the letter needs to speak about you as an individual and a form (or non-specific) letter of recommendation will not suffice. All letters of recommendation can be sent via email or post to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
  • Written 500-750-word essay (typed, double-spaced)  in which applicants describe academic and professional preparation for the program, reasons for desiring entrance, counseling career objectives and examples of experience and/or specific situations that applicants were involved with. Review the "Application Essay" section of the admission requirements above for more information.

Step 3: Interviews

Following the successful completion of steps one through four, applicants may be invited to group and/or individual interviews with MAC faculty.
