Students participate in a color run at the Saint Martin's Summer Cultural Exchange program

For over 30 years, Saint Martin’s has hosted students from our partner high schools and Universities abroad for short term summer cultural programs.

The students come from China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam. They participate in English and U.S. culture workshops, community service projects and Pacific Northwest activities, such as trips to Mount Rainier, the state capitol, Seattle and various museums.

  • Summer programs coordinator

    We are hiring a summer programs coordinator to design, implement and oversee the summer cultural exchange programs here at Saint Martin’s University. This is a part-time to full-time position. Starting April 1, the summer programs coordinator will start at 20 hours/week and move to a full-time 40 hours/week position from May 11-end of August. This position may have overtime opportunities, so flexibility is required.

    Essential functions

    Program design:

    • Design, develop and implement program itineraries incorporating ideas and feedback from program partners
    • Design and implement survey tools for summer program participants
    • Distribute and collect required forms and waivers related to summer program participants (e.g. field trip waiver forms, emergency information and medical information forms, press release form, and conference card management)

    Program implementation:

    • Coordinate scheduling and monitoring of summer program transportation needs using Saint Martin's vehicles and other transportation companies as needed
    • Establish work schedules for program leaders, student ambassadors and drivers
    • Coordinate the day to day operations of the summer programs, to include a daily touch base with the assistant dean and others involved in summer programs at the beginning of each day
    • Assist with training summer program staff and ESL instructors
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    Competencies

    • Ability to multi-task and work in a busy work environment with evidence of being highly organized
    • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with international students
    • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to international education, diversity and inclusion
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, students and constituents
    • Must be willing to drive a 12-passenger van to transport students/visitors to and from events upon successful completion of  Saint Martin's driving certification
    • Ability to problem solve and perform under time-pressured situations
    • Must be supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education

    Required qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Demonstrated event planning experience
    • Excellent Excel, Word and Publisher skills
    • Demonstrated leadership skills with the work independently
    • Detail oriented
    • Excellent communication skills a must

    Preferred qualifications

    • Previous experience with international exchange students
    • Previous experience traveling or living internationally
    • ESL teaching experience

  • Summer project assistants

    We are hiring two summer project assistants for the summer cultural exchange programs at Saint Martin’s University. These are full-time, 40 hours/week, positions that will assist the summer programs coordinator with design, development and implementation of the programs. The position is from May 18-end of August. One summer project assistant will focus on transportation and ticketing aspects while the other summer project assistant will focus on campus and facility reservations. Flexibility is required for this position as there may be some opportunities to work outside of normal office hours.

    Essential functions

    • Assist with designing, developing and implementing program schedules
    • Assist with planning, organization and implementation of a formal training program for summer programs staff
    • Assist with coordinating on campus facility reservations
    • Assist with transportation reservations
    • Assist with coordinating with various on- and off-campus resources and constituents in offering diverse educational activities and sessions for summer program participants
    • Assist with ensuring compliance throughout summer programs with Saint Martin's facility policies, procedures and regulations 
    • Assist with ordering food, supplies and equipment, and arranging for proper distribution
    • Assist with money distribution

  • Student ambassadors

    Part-time, temporary summer position

    We are hiring up to 12 student ambassadors to participate in games, activities and language exchange activities with visiting international students attending two week and three week cultural programs at Saint Martin’s. Games and activities are scheduled in the mornings and afternoons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

    Shifts may vary depending on the activity, so some flexibility is required. Additional training hours may be required prior to the start date.

    Student Ambassadors are needed for the following dates: 

    • 9 student ambassadors for the college program plus a high school or Japanese program: July 20–Aug. 21
    • ​3 student ambassadors for a Japanese program: Aug. 7–16

    Required qualifications

    • Age 16 or above
    • Strong leadership skills with ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Good communication skills and confidence in interacting with university-level international students
    • Willingness to be flexible and assist exchange students as needed
    • Outgoing and positive attitude
    • Authorized to work in the U.S.

    Preferred qualifications

    • Previous experience with international exchange students
    • Previous experience traveling or living internationally
    • Knowledge of a foreign language
    • If no prior work experience, please include a brief description of previous activities, sports, clubs, volunteer and/or other experiences that have prepared you to be a student ambassador

  • Program leaders

    Part-time, temporary summer positions

    We are hiring up to 6 program leaders (PLs) to lead games, activities and field trips for visiting international students attending two-week and three-week cultural programs at Saint Martin’s. Activities are scheduled in the mornings and afternoons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Field trips take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Hours will vary depending on the activity, so flexibility is required. Additional training hours may be required prior to the start date.

    Program leaders are needed for the following dates:

    • 3 college program leaders: July 20–Aug. 7
    • 1 high school: Aug. 10–21
    • 2 Japanese program leaders: one Aug. 7–16 and one Aug. 10–19

    Required qualifications

    • Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to supervise team activities
    • Good communication skills and confidence in interacting with university-level international students
    • Willingness to be flexible and assist international students as needed
    • Outgoing and positive attitude
    • Authorized to work in the U.S.

    Preferred qualifications

    • Previous experience with international exchange students
    • Previous experience traveling or living internationally
    • Knowledge of a foreign language

    Compensation: $16.00/hour

  • ESL instructors

    We are hiring 6 ESL instructors to teach four hours per day with classes scheduled in the mornings and afternoons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Classes focus on American culture and English conversation for international students attending two week and three week cultural programs at Saint Martin’s.

    Classes will take place during the following dates: 

    • 4 college program ESL instructors: July 20-Aug. 7
    • 2 high school ESL instructors: Aug. 10-21

     Compensation: $35.00/hour
