I was born in Ohio but raised in Spokane, WA. While I’ve spent time in other areas, Washington is my home. I have a passion for a lot of different things in life from music to sports. While looking at what I wanted to do with my career, I was on scholarship to play soccer at Whitwoth University in Spokane, WA, and on a music scholarship at Western Washington University. It wasn’t until I got to Western that I knew where I wanted to go to college. I see the same process playing out in students when they visit SMU and I make a concerted effort to make sure their SMU experience is a positive one.
I graduated from Western Washington University (02-06) with B.A. in Recreation and Leisure with an emphasis in Outdoor Education. As a student, I had a variety of opportunities to learn about the field of recreation. Working in the Outdoor Center and Wade King Rec Center I cultivated a passion for recreation. While pursing my degree I completed internships with the Young Life Mountaineering program Beyond Malibu in British Columbia, Canada, and US Navy MWR program in Yokosuka, Japan. Eventually I completed my Master’s degree in Recreation Administration from Aurora University in Aurora, IL working with the high/low ropes course program.
The recreation field has taken me across the U.S. and throughout the world to places I never thought I’d see. Throughout my career I’ve been afforded the opportunities to learn, try, and fail. These experiences have shaped who I am and helped make me a better person. Managing the Campus Recreation department at Saint Martin’s University is a culmination of 15 years working in the field of recreation rolled into one job. I’m excited to share my experience and encourage the SMU community to utilize recreation as a means to improve their overall health and well-being.
