Jonathan House, class of 2014

Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in psychology

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I am from a small town in Western New York and came out to Washington because of the Army. I was in the Infantry for almost eight years and did two tours in Iraq. I decided it was time to get out an pursue other interests. Current I am a junior and expect to graduate in the spring of 2014.

Why do you want to obtain a BSW?

I want to obtain my BSW (with a minor in psychology) because I would like to work with families, military and/or military families. I looked at Marriage and Family Therapy programs at other schools but found that the BSW program would give me more freedom for job choices.

What motivates you to become a social worker?

First off I enjoy helping people. I feel I would be good at translating that into a career. Social work is like a math problem with often more than one right answer. Like all those tests students love taking, the goal is to find the "most right" answer. I know there is much more to learn and I look forward to it.

What do you like/enjoy/appreciate about Saint Martin's BSW program?

I enjoy the small class sizes here at Saint Martin's University. It allows you to get to know your professors and for them to know you. I attended a larger college (16,000+ at the time I went) and there was little to no interaction with anyone in your department. I enjoy interacting with other students and faculty, getting and giving feedback, and the fact that everyone is so friendly.
