First-year students are required to sign up for one of the four two-day orientation sessions. The first day offers students the opportunity to connect with faculty from their chosen area of study, explore the campus community and socialize with other new students. The second day includes academic advising, class registration and career planning. All students who attend are required to spend the night in university housing free of charge, unless they seek approved accommodations.

Parents and family members are encouraged to attend orientation with their student and participate in our family program which occurs on day two. The family program includes a special presentation from the Dean of Students and several sessions that will allow parents and family members to learn how to best support their student.

Orientation schedules

Summer orientation is the best way to meet new friends, early!

Orientation schedules are now online! Please note that check in for students will take place from 1:00-2:00pm in Parson's Hall on Day One. Parent and Guest check in takes place from 8:30-9:00am on Day Two in the Norman Worthington Conference Center (NWCC). Orientation for everyone will conclude at about 4:30pm on Day Two. Please note that parents and guests will not be with their student during the advising process. Students will be with trained SMU advisors.

FAQ

How do I register for orientation?
Online registration will be available in March. Please note that students will not be able to register until they have submitted their deposit, turned in all transcripts, set up their student email account, and turned in all medical forms. Once these items have been completed, students can register online using the form on this page.

Can my parents or other family members participate in orientation?
Parents and family who wish to participate in the family program can be registered in your orientation registration form. 

What meals are provided?
Continental breakfast and lunch are provided to students and families on both days. Dinner is provided for students only on Day 1, as the student program extends through the evening.

What lodging options are available?
Students are required to stay the night on campus in the residence halls. This gives students the opportunity to meet other students and experience life on a college campus. Many students find future roommates when they stay in our residence halls and find the experience to be their favorite part of orientation. Parents and families are encouraged to stay at one of our partner hotels.

What should I bring?
Students should bring:

  • Comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Sleeping bag or bedding, pillow, and towel
  • Toiletries
  • AP Score reports/College Transcripts (if transferring in credits)

What types of activities can I expect?
During orientation, students can expect to participate in a variety of academic programs as well as social activities. Our program includes exciting campus programming in the evening, like laser tag, an ice cream social, union games, outdoor sports, etc. Many students make their very first college friends during orientation and come back in the fall already knowing people.

Where should I park?
Please park in the Parsons Hall parking lot. Check-in and breakfast will be in the Parsons Hall lobby. This lot can be found on our campus map.
