What is academic early alert?
The Academic Early Alert Program supports student learning by identifying students who may be at risk of academic difficulty or failure. Faculty and staff are encouraged to identify and refer students who are experiencing poor attendance, low exam scores, or failing grades so that appropriate interventions and resources can be provided. Your timely response to student academic problems will facilitate an outreach that may increase the likelihood of success!
When do I make a referral?
As soon as you see signs of academic concern or withdrawal please speak to the student about your observations. It may also be appropriate to consult with the student's advisor. If you see no signs of improvement, submit the online referral.
Potential areas of concern:
- Excessive/unexplained absences
- Missed or late assignments
- Habitual tardiness
- Low quiz and test grades
- Inadequate background for this course
- Apparent lack of interest
What happens after the referral is submitted?
The student will receive an outreach letter from the center with copies sent to the student's advisor and the referral source. In this letter the student will be encouraged to meet with the appropriate faculty and advisor. In addition, the student will be invited to schedule an appointment with the learning center to discuss academic services and campus resources. The intervention may vary depending on the circumstances reported.
