Saint Martin’s student-athletes to benefit from upcoming
golf tournament
July 24, 2012
LACEY,
WASHINGTON — Attention, South Sound golf enthusiasts! There is still
time to register for the 29th annual
Saint Martin’s Golf Tournament — one of the longest ongoing golf
tournaments in South Puget Sound. The tournament takes place Friday,
Aug. 3, at the Olympia Country and Golf Club.
“The tournament offers a fun way for alumni and friends of the
University to support Saint Martin’s athletics, as proceeds from the
tournament go to scholarships for student-athletes,” says Bob
Grisham, Saint Martin’s athletic director.
The event, which has been a sell-out nearly every year, is
expected to draw 200 golfers. Serving as the tournament’s honorary
chair is Phil Weigand, retired USMC Lieutenant Colonel and South
Sound real estate professional who is a longtime supporter of Saint
Martin’s and has served on the University Board of Trustees since
2005.
This year’s tournament features a double shotgun start, with
morning play beginning at 8:00 a.m. and afternoon play at 1:30 p.m.
Registration opens an hour beforehand, at 7:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
outside the Pro Shop. Tournament play will be a scramble format with
open, mixed, senior and alumni divisions.
Following the afternoon flight, players and guests will reconvene
for the annual awards dinner at Saint Martin’s Norman Worthington
Conference Center, 5300 Pacific Ave. SE. A post-tournament social
begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards ceremony at 7:30
p.m. New to this year are silent and live auctions that will offer
high-end items for golf fanatics.
Players can still
register online or call 360-438-4557. Individual tournament
registration is $150, which includes course green fees, cart rental,
course refreshments, tee prizes and dinner. A coupon book that
provides entry to all on-course contests is $25, or $30 if purchased
the day of the tournament. The price for each non-golfer dinner
guest is $20.
Mark your calendar for next year’s 30th anniversary of the Saint
Martin’s Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 2, 2013.
