Saint Martin's Golf Tournament honors two alumni
July 26, 2010
Lacey, Washington — Saint Martin’s 27th Annual Golf Tournament will
be held on Friday, August 6 at the Olympia Country and Golf Club. This
year, the tournament will be a double shotgun—the morning shotgun play
will begin at 8 a.m. and the afternoon shotgun at 1 p.m. Tournament play
will be a scramble format with open, mixed, senior, and alumni
divisions. Players can still register at
www.stmartin.edu/golftournament. Proceeds for the tournament benefit the
University’s Saints athletics program.
After the afternoon shotgun, players and guests will reconvene for a
closing dinner and awards ceremony at Saint Martin’s Norman Worthington
Conference Center. The post-tournament social begins at 5 p.m., with the
dinner and awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. At the dinner, the University
will honor two alumni, John Hyppa ’74 and Terry Lee ’79.
“John and Terry have participated in the golf tournament for years
and supported the University in a variety of other activities,” says Bob
Grisham, Saint Martin’s athletic director. “This year’s tournament
allows us to acknowledge and thank them for their continuing support.”
John Hyppa, from Buckley, Washington, played basketball and baseball
at Saint Martin’s before being drafted by the Navy Reserves. After
reserves training, he came back and played basketball for Coach Dick
Kaufman, later receiving the Inspirational Award during his senior year.
After college, he taught in the North Thurston school district and at
White River where he coached football. John also coached basketball at
every level and was an assistant coach at Saint Martin’s, Fort
Steilacoom, and Tacoma Community College.
Terry Lee, longtime resident of Olympia and a cancer survivor, is
also a former basketball player at Saint Martin’s. He has been long
involved in the golf tournament as well as many other Saint Martin’s
activities.
