September 1, 2009

Lacey, Washington – On Friday, September 18, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D. will be inaugurated as the tenth president of Saint Martin's University. The public is invited to attend the installation ceremony, which will take place at 2 p.m. in the Hal and Inge Marcus Pavilion at Saint Martin’s University, followed by a reception in the Norman Worthington Conference Center. Father Hilary Thimmesh, O.S.B., Ph.D., president emeritus of Saint John’s University, will be the inaugural speaker.

The Most Reverend Eusebio Elizondo, D.D., J.C.D., Auxiliary Bishop for the Seattle Archdiocese, will preside over the celebratory Mass earlier in the day to receive Heynderickx’s profession of faith in accordance with Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the constitution on Catholic higher education drafted by the late Pope John Paul II.

Heynderickx was named the new president by the University's board of trustees in November 2008 and took office on January 1, 2009. Prior to coming to Saint Martin’s, Heynderickx was the vice president for finance and administration at the University of San Diego and oversaw the finance and administration division including endowment investments, facilities management, and the budget. Heynderickx gained most of his experience in higher education at the University of Portland where he worked for 27 years in a variety of finance and administration positions, including the vice president for financial affairs. At the University of Portland, he participated in a major institutional strategic planning process that led to a significant redirection of the university’s focus resulting in a strengthened institution.

A native of the Northwest, Heynderickx earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Oregon in 1975, an M.B.A. from the University of Portland in 1983, and his Ph.D. in education administration from the University of Oregon in 1992. Heynderickx and his wife, Kathleen, have three children: Marc, Troy, and Kathryn. Heynderickx was recently appointed to the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and also recently joined the Board of Trustees at the Olympia Tumwater Foundation and the Association of Washington Business (AWB) board.
