March 12, 2007 LACEY, Washington – Dr. Douglas Astolfi, president of Saint Martin’s University, has been selected to be a member of the board of directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) beginning in June 2007. ACCU is a Washington, D.C. based higher education association representing the more than 230 U.S. Catholic colleges and universities. The purpose of the association is to promote Catholic higher education and to serve as the voice of Catholic higher education in the United States. “I am honored to have been selected to serve on the ACCU board,” Astolfi stated. “This organization is an important national higher education forum, and I look forward to bringing St. Martin’s to the forefront of discussions concerning Catholic and Benedictine education. In addition, I will bring the context of those national discussions back to the members of the SMU community.” According to the ACCU, Catholic colleges and
universities account for half of all students enrolled in faith-based
institutions of higher education in the United States; and Catholic
colleges and universities in the United States account for half of all
the Catholic universities in the world. In the United States, Catholic institutions of higher learning include: 4 medical schools, 26 Law schools, 17 schools of engineering, 81 schools of nursing, 177 schools of education, 19 women's colleges, 3 Carnegie Classified research universities, 13 doctoral universities, and 2 aviation programs. Through research, collecting and coordinating data, publications, and conferences, ACCU encourages and facilitates sharing of ideas and cooperative efforts among its member institutions. ACCU’s journal, Current Issues in Catholic Higher Education, is published semi-annually, and its electronic newsletter, Update, quarterly. Saint Martin’s University prepares students for successful lives through its 22 majors and six graduate programs spanning the liberal arts, business, education and engineering.
