April 18, 2005 Lacey, Wash. – Saint Martin’s College welcomes students from elementary through high school age to campus this summer for a variety of fun and challenging learning opportunities. Starting in late June, Saint Martin’s will be offering programs in band, orchestra, science and engineering and several sports. Music camps This year’s program includes group singing and guitar sessions for the first time. Also offered are classes in jazz strings; advanced string orchestra and string chamber ensemble; beginning and advanced band; introduction to Stomp; brass; composing on the computer; flute; and intermediate percussion. A seasoned faculty of area music teachers will lead the sessions. They include Greg Allison of Olympia School District, conductor, instrumental band teacher and member of the Northwest Wind Symphony; Mary Jo Rydholm of Olympia School District, instrumental string teacher and advanced string coach for the Conservatory Orchestra; Tom Mettler of North Thurston School District, instrumental band director and jazz trumpeter in the Olympia Jazz Initiative; and Chase Chang of the Puyallup School District, orchestra director and longtime band and choir teacher. The program is presented by Saint Martin’s and community partners H&R Block (Lacey and Westside Olympia locations), Music 6000, Music Service, R.L. Ray Violin Shop, South Sound Music Center, Westside Music Center and Yenney Music Co. Class sizes are limited. Science and engineering, Camp WISE Some of the topics students will cover include robotics and automation; bridge-building; forensics in engineering and science; when 2 + 2 = 1 – concepts in infinity; the melody of a matrix, optics and optical illusions; testing to destruction; and the fauna and flora of Henderson Inlet. Participants have an opportunity to continue working with their mentor-teachers after completing the camp. The popular camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22 through July 1, costs $125. Enrollment is limited to 30 students, so early registration is recommended.
