Lacey, Wash. - DeWayne
Strange, a Saint Martin’s College senior from Chehalis, is the recipient
of college’s 2004 Outstanding Student Leadership Award.
The award recognizes
the achievement of a visible and exemplary student leader at Saint
Martin’s. Nominations are made from members of the campus community.
Selection, by committee, is based on several factors, including vision;
commitment to excellence; personification of Benedictine values such as
hospitality, service and a desire to learn; ability to motivate,
influence and lead others and serving as a positive role model and to
promote positive change.
Strange, an English
major, is 2003-04 communications director for the Associated Students of
Saint Martin’s College, the college’s student government. He chairs the
college’s media board, is in charge of ASSMC press releases and works
with the ASSMC webmaster to maintain the its website. He also is active
in the college’s theater productions, Student Liturgy and The Bucket, a
folk music worship and praise service.
He is a student member
of Student Conduct Committee and also works as a student security
officer for the college’s Office of Campus Safety and Security.
He was nominated for
the honor by his work supervisor, Campus Security Director Pat Sturgill,
who describes Strange as a hospitable and committed self-starter,
capable of performing any number of duties without supervision.
“As an English major,
DeWayne is well-read. This aspect gives him a broad perspective in the
way he perceives others and helps him respond with openness and
compassion,” Sturgill says. “When we hire new student officers, I
frequently ask DeWayne to act as their training officer because I know
he will instill in them a sense of responsibility for their role in
keeping our community safe … DeWayne has a talent for making people
understand what is happening and is skillful in getting people to work
for the better of all. As an effective leader with values, vision and a
clear voice, he is a complete package, a real team player.”
Strange hopes to work
as a playwright and in film when he completes his undergraduate degree
this year.
