Saint Martin's chemistry faculty member elected to regional office Friday, February 21, 2003 Lacey, Wash. - Gregory Milligan, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry at Saint Martin’s College, has been elected chairman-elect of the Puget Sound section of the American Chemical Society. With 163,000 members, the American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society. It advances research and knowledge of the field through a variety of ways, including publications, conferences and professional development opportunities. It also works to educate the public about the roles chemistry plays in improving public health, finding solutions to challenging problems and in other ways, and lobbies legislative bodies on the behalf of the chemical sciences, Milligan said. As president-elect of the regional section, Milligan will serve on its executive committee and organize meetings and activities for 2004, the year he assumes leadership of the regional organization. The society’s Puget Sound section includes all of Western Washington from the Canadian border south to Olympia. Milligan, of Olympia, earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon in 1983 and his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Washington in 1990. Prior to moving to Olympia in 1995, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the department of medicinal chemistry at the University of Kansas and a faculty member at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. At Saint Martin’s, Milligan teaches organic chemistry, biochemistry and general chemistry, as well as a variety of special topics courses, including magnetic resonance.
