Memorial for John Ishii to be held at
Saint Martin's Abbey
Monday, January 28, 2002
Lacey, Wash. - A vocal recital on Feb. 16
featuring Br. Aelred Woodard, O.S.B., and Br. Elias Lien, O.S.B., will
honor the life of John D. Ishii, Ph.D., a Saint Martin’s alumnus and
educator. Woodard, a tenor, and Lien, a bass, will be accompanied by
pianist Robert Jorgensen at the 8 p.m. recital in the Abbey Church at
Saint Martin's Abbey. The vocalists will perform music by Aaron Copland,
Jacques Ibert, Thomas Moore, Henry Purcell and Hugo Wolf. The free
concert is open to the public; seating is limited; doors open at 7 p.m.
Ishii,
born in Seattle in 1921, was a 1938 graduate of Saint Martin’s High
School and a 1942 graduate of Saint Martin's College. Following his
service in World War II, he completed doctoral studies in international
relations at Georgetown University. He served throughout Asia with the
State Department for more than 20 years and in 1973 returned to Saint
Martin's to become professor of political science. In 1980, Ishii became
the first lay president in the history of Saint Martin's College. He
served on numerous boards, including the Washington Commission for the
Humanities, Japanese American Citizens League, the Governor's American
Asian Affairs Commission and the YMCA's International Division.
Ishii died March 18, 2001 after a series
of strokes.
