Student Success Initiative

The Student Success Initiative (SSI) supports the mission of
Saint Martin’s University, to know, to care, to serve…by offering a
campus-wide early intervention system. Recognizing that faculty and staff
are dedicated to helping students succeed, the Academic Standards Committee has
created an online referral system to facilitate the transmission of information
about students who appear to be experiencing challenges to their academic
success. The online referral form is not intended to replace phone calls or
personal visits to the appropriate campus personnel, but is offered as a
supplemental means of communicating in the pursuit of supporting the success of
Saint Martin’s students.
What is the Goal of SSI?
The goal of the Student Success Initiative is to provide a safety net for
students experiencing academic or behavioral problems that may endanger their
academic success. Faculty, staff and the monastic community are in a prime
position to observe students who exhibit at-risk behaviors that may interfere
with academic achievement. While it is recognized that many concerns can be
addressed directly with students, occasionally a problem or persistent concern
may exceed an individual’s resources or expertise. In that case, by referring
students to the appropriate support resource, faculty and staff can ensure that
students know their options and are informed about the available resources.
These many resources include the student’s advisor, financial aid, counseling
office, career services, residence hall manager, campus ministry, learning and
writing center, disability support services, etc. The earlier a student is aware
that someone is concerned about his/her academic progress, the better the
chances of a positive outcome for that student.
