Washington Semester
Program
The
political science department provides opportunities for SMU students to spend a
semester in Washington, D.C. under the auspices of the Washington Semester
Program at the American University. The program provides selected juniors
and seniors with an opportunity to observe and study government in action.
Students in the program concentrate on coursework in a particular area of
interest. As part of the program they complete two seminars, an
internship, and a major research project utilizing the unique resources of the
Washington, D.C. area. The Washington Semester Program offers programs in
the following areas: American politics semester, economic policy
semester, foreign policy semester, international business and trade semester,
justice semester, peace and conflict resolution semester, journalism semester
or public law semester. Students interested in participating in this
program should contact Professor Richard Langill.
History/Political Science Club
The
department sponsor a History/Political Science Club whose membership is open to
students of all majors. The club sponsors guest speakers, field trips, voter
registration drives, candidate debates and other activities that
enhance classroom learning and provide a service to the University in many
ways.
Northwest
Model Arab League
Many
political science majors at Saint Martin's take an active role in the Northwest
Model Arab League, a simulation of the 21-country League of Arab States. The
Model Arab League is designed to provide an opportunity to study policy-making
organization and Middle East issues, and to practice parliamentary procedure
and forensic skills. Since the founding of the Northwest Model Arab League in
1988, Saint Martin's delegations have won top team honors and been
chosen "outstanding delegation" almost every year. And individual students
have won countless "outstanding delegate" awards.
Washington
Legislative Internships
The department participates in the Washington State Legislative Internship
Program where students spend the spring semester working with staff and members
of the Washington State House of Representatives or Senate. Student
interns typically do legislative research, bill tracking, and constituent
correspondence. They have an opportunity to attend committee hearings and
other meetings, and interact with staff and legislators.
