Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology ("MAC")

The MAC "Online tour"
Chapter 6:  MAC program flexibility

A third feature of the program is the flexibility of the scheduling.  We have tried to make the MAC program flexible in two ways.

First, the program is flexible in its coursework.  Classes in the MAC program are constantly being revised to represent the cutting edge of the field of counseling psychology.

In addition, the coursework is selected to match, or exceed, the requirements of the Dept. of Health credential: "Licensed Mental Health Counselor" and "Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist."

The Dept. of Health educational requirements are listed under  WAC 246-810-521 (for MHC) and WAC 246-810-321  (for MFT) at their website. Look under "Title 246" after going to: http://slc.leg.wa.gov/wacbytitle.htm

Second, we have tried to make the course schedule flexible to accommodate commuting students, those who work full-time, and those with young families.  All courses are offered on a schedule of one-meeting per week Most courses are offered during the evening hours, although afternoon courses and some Friday and Saturday classes are occasionally offered.  All required courses are offered at least once per year in evening hours.  (See the tentative Annual Schedule of classes.)

All beginning students are urged to begin with the 500-level numbering sequence.  In other words, unless special arrangement must be made, students will normally begin with MAC 502: "Group Therapy", MAC 503: "Individual Therapy", MAC 512: Family Systems Therapy",  and/or MAC 522 - Treatment of Abusive Relationships." These classes are offered most semesters.  The faculty are available to discuss the first semester's registration following the decision to accept you into the program.
Pre-registration usually occurs in early April and early November.

For more information on when to take electives, please see the recommended MAC Time Line.
