Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology ("MAC")

The MAC "Online tour"
Chapter 5:  Instructions and MAC courses

One of the major goals of the Masters Program in Counseling Psychology is a high quality of instruction. The faculty are dedicated professionals who are personally committed to the role of training future therapists. All the faculty have on-going case-loads, which keep them sharp, up-to-date, and "close to the action."  Thus, they know what they teach from a current and personal perspective as well as based on the theories in the field.

Another aspect of MAC instruction that is critical in the success of the program is the student/teacher ratio (12 to 1, on the average). Because this ratio is so low, the MAC faculty are able to be particularly responsive to individual student needs. At Saint Martin's University, the student is not "just a number." MAC students have a small cohort of peers and enjoy close relationships with the faculty throughout the Program and after graduation.

One of the highlights of the program is its well-designed combination of required courses, generous electives, and off-campus internship training. The courses were selected so as to emphasize breadth of knowledge and address issues most useful to future clinicians. In addition, the academic portion of the program meets or exceeds all educational requirements necessary for Washington State licensure as a Mental Health Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist. (More detailed information is available in " Counselor Credentials in WA " in the Alumni Student section)

Specific course titles, course descriptions, and sample syllabi of all MAC classes are available from the MAC Class Notebook.

A third feature of the program is the flexibility of the scheduling.  Classes are offered once a week with meeting times scheduled to accommodate commuting students, those who work full-time, and those with young families.  Every required class is offered at least once a year in the evening hours as are most of the electives.  We minimize afternoon and Saturday classes.  We understand the time pressure that most students are under and want to make their graduate education as simple as possible.
