MAC Admission Handbook:
Chapter 8:
Procedures for application to the program

The first place to start is by filling out the two application forms for admission to the MAC Program:  the MAC Application Form and the Supplementary Application form.  You may fill the forms out on-line and then print them off to submit to the MAC office in person or by fax or mail.  If you have questions, you may contact the MAC Program Assistant (360) 438-4560.

There is a one-time, non-refundable $35 application fee. Please make the check or money order payable to Saint Martin's University.

Please send your MAC application packet (including the application form, supplemental application form, your personal goal statement
of 3 to 5 pages
, and the application fee)  to the address below.  Also please make sure the
two or three letters of recommendation, and
all university transcripts are sent to the address below. Your letters of recommendation and transcripts may be sent in separately by your recommenders and the various institutions you have attended.
(note:  The GMAT is not required; The GRE is not required)

MAC Administrative Assistant
The MAC Program
Saint Martin's University
5300 Pacific Ave.
Lacey, WA 98503-1297

The MAC Administrative Assistant will assume the responsibility for starting a file and collecting all applicant materials. The MAC faculty will not even receive a review copy of your file until it is complete (includes material from all six categories underlined above).

When the file is complete, the Administrative Assistant will make a photocopy of the materials.  The completed applications will then be reviewed by the MAC Advisory Committee.  Remember that, if your application is not quite complete (missing one letter of reference or a transcript, for example), it will not be reviewed.  The MAC Director cannot review your application if it is still incomplete in the MAC office!  It is your responsibility to make sure that your file is complete.

Don't be afraid to call the MAC Administrative Assistant (360) 438-4560 periodically to check on the status of your file and see if any of the outstanding materials have arrived.  Students don't wish to be a nuisance, but don't be afraid to keep tabs on your application.

If you are planning to apply for financial aid, you must have your materials packet completed and sent to the MAC office no later than the MAC deadline. Financial aid priority deadline is March 1st of each year. After that date, aid depends on funds available until they are exhausted. Call the Financial Aid office at (360) 438-4397 for specific details when
you apply.

The MAC program accepts applications any time during the year. However, if you want to ensure that your file will be reviewed in time for enrollment, you should have your application materials submitted at least one month prior to the semester desired or follow the deadline dates (discussed earlier). Please call if you have any questions about the deadlines:

Also, remember that you must type a 3 to 5 page introspective, life-span, autobiographical statement. You are strongly urged to carefully read the preceding topics on "Qualifications for Admission to the Program" before you write anything. The statement needs to be specific enough to provide the reader with a concrete sense of your vocational and intellectual development as they pertain to psychology. You may also touch on any personal issues that will help the faculty gain a sense of who you are as a person. However, in your autobiographical goal statement, be sure to describe:

  1. Your academic and professional preparation for the MAC program
  2. Reasons for desiring entrance into this program specifically
  3. Your short-term and long-term educational and professional goals and objectives
  4. Include examples of experience, interventions, case studies and/or specific situations that you were involved with, or observed, as a counselor, intern, or student

Again, along with your biographical statement, you need to fill out the two application forms.  The first is the MAC Application Form and the second is the Supplementary Application form, which asks additional questions.

In addition to completing those forms, you will need to submit at least two, but no more than three, letters of recommendation.  As discussed earlier, one letter should be from someone very familiar with your academic work and another letter should be from a supervisor in a work setting.  Letters from students or friends are not usually appropriate. There is no recommendation form; a general letter, preferably on official letterhead, is all that is required.
