Course Description:

This course will describe the specific issues of children and, to a lesser extent, adolescents.  It will define the role of the treatment provider in dealing with these issues. It will encourage therapists to examine their own inner child.  Objectives of the course include:

  1. To develop an understanding of the developmental stages of childhood and adolescence.
  2. To develop an understanding of issues pertinent to these life stages.
  3. To understand how abuse, divorce, death, etc. affect children and adolescents.
  4. To develop a framework for therapy to treat children and adolescents.
  5. To confront issues within which may hamper the therapist's ability to be effective.

Course Requirements:

  1. Attend all classes and participate in discussions.
  2. Write up an autobiography of your childhood and adolescence.
  3. Interview two children/adolescents. Write your response to those interviews.
  4. Do one session - play therapy, art therapy, sandtray - with a child. Write up the session. (Does not have to be a child with a problem).
