Sample Syllabus (Subject to Change)

Faculty Member:

Leticia Nieto, PsyD

Course Description

This course examines various innovative theories and expressive techniques in individual, family and group psychotherapy.  The goal of the class is to provide students with opportunities to try out a variety of expressive and innovative therapeutic techniques.  Course objectives include:

  1. To become familiar with the foundations of metaphoric and expressive therapy.
  2. To identify and discuss issues surrounding the use of expressive strategies.
  3. To create a repertoire of well thought out strategies.
  4. To uncover your own style of expressive psychotherapy.
  5. To enhance self-knowledge and therapeutic competence through participation in therapeutic demonstrations.

Required Textbooks:
(Please do not order your books for the current semester from this list.  It may not be up-to-date.)

  • Sitgnell, Spare, Stewart, Thompson. (1990). Sandplay Studies, Bradway, Sigo Press. 1990.
  • Landgarten & Lubbers, (Eds.) (1992). Adult Art Psychotherapy. Brunner/Mazel.
  • Combs & Freedman (1990). Symbol, Story & Ceremony. Norton
  • Holmes and Karp (1991). Psychodrama. Routledge.
  • Additional readings on reserve form part of the required readings.

Course Requirements:

Each item below makes up one eighth of your grade. Please turn in work on time. I will not accept any work after the last day of class. Please submit two clear, typed copies of each written assignment; one will become part of the class record, the other will be returned to you with comments.

  1. Prepare a guided journal entry for each class session (except the last) with thoughtful questions, reactions, and responses to the reading material, experiences and class discussions.
  2. Complete a Technique and Strategy Glossary. Begin by identifying and researching expressive arts strategies and techniques. Please include any resources you used. Develop a format for describing, at least 30, strategies as well as the conditions in which each would be indicated and contraindicated. Create a system for categorizing the techniques and strategies. You may conduct research on expressive or innovative therapies not covered in class.
  3. Prepare, memorize and tell a spoken 5 minute autobiographical story (Do NOT use any cards or notes or an outline). You can author it, or you can adapt a fairy tale, folk story, or myth.
  4. Prepare a brief (15 minutes) experiential demonstrations for in class strategies sharing based on reading, research and prior experience. Please provide accompanying outlines for these demonstrations, (including resources) enough copies for each class member.
  5. Prepare and present a report of required readings. (Sign up on first night) You will have three to five minutes of class time to present a report of readings. The task is to identify what the author is trying to say. What truth are they stating? This report is not a summary or a selection of quotes from the book or article. Your task is not to tell us what the article was about (everyone in class will have already read it). Instead, in your own words, synthesize the essence of the readings you are responsible for by simply stating the central point or points. Please also submit two copies of an outline of your presentation.
