Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology ("MAC")

MAC 651: "Treatment of Substance Abuse"
Sample Syllabus (Subject to Change)

Faculty Member:

Leticia Nieto, PsyD

Course Description:

This course examines various chemical dependency models, treatment perspectives and recovery processes.  The goal of the course is to provide students with opportunities to examine traditional and alternative perspectives in the treatment of chemical dependency. The emphasis in this course will be on the function of shame as the primary emotion connected to addictive patterns. We will focus on face to face counseling strategies through role-playing.  Objectives for the course include:

  1. To become familiar with the foundations of substance abuse treatment, including: psychopharmacology, phases of recovery, clinical issues, interventions, and special populations.
  2. To create a model of healing and recovery that attends to individual needs.
  3. To uncover your own assumptions and style in treating substance abuse.
  4. To enhance self-knowledge and therapeutic competence through writing for recovery and personal growth.
  5. To examine issues of race, class, age and gender as related to chemical dependency, addiction and recovery.
