Course Description:

This course describes the process of group therapy, the characteristics of a good group leader and applications of designing and running groups. This course will provide experiential learning opportunities for students as both group members and facilitators.

Course Objectives:

  1. To become familiar with concepts of group formation, composition and function.
  2. To understand the stages of groups and strategies for dealing with each stage.
  3. To examine issues of transference/counter transference in group process.
  4. To examine the role of the therapist in group therapy.
  5. To discuss and practice specific techniques in group therapy.
  6. To enhance self-knowledge of self as therapist and personally through written and experiential exercises.

  • Corey, M. & Corey, G. (1987), Groups: Process and practice, Brooks/Cole.
  • Yalom, Irvin D. (1985), The theory and practice of group psychotherapy, Basic Books, Inc.
  • Course Requirements:

    1. Prepare a guided journal entry for each class session.
    2. Prepare a group proposal on a therapy group that you would someday like to facilitate. This proposal will be expanded into a group materials packet (See #4).
    3. Prepare a group materials packet to be used to implement your group proposal. This will include a complete plan for each group session, activities or exercises and any written information. This packet must be complete. Any therapist should be able to pick up your packet and lead your group.
    4. This class will include an experiential component in which students will participate in a group both as members and as co-leaders. Students will write a 5-page synthesis paper on their learning about self as both a group member and co-leader.
    5. Together with your co-leader, prepare an activity plan for your co-leadership period.
