Master of Arts in
Counseling Psychology ("MAC") MAC
Class Notebook:
Chapter 7: Transfer
Courses
The last type of classes
to discuss are those courses you may wish to
transfer in for credit. Generally, nine
(total)
semester
hours of graduate work may be considered for
transfer credit, but it may be possible to accept even more in
certain special cases. Requests for transfer credit
normally need to be made no later than the end of
your second
semester
in the Program.
Note that Saint
Martin's runs on a semester system. This means
that transfer credits on a quarter system will be
converted to semester credits. One quarter credit
is equivalent to 2/3
(.666) of a semester
credit. Therefore, one three-hour class on a
quarter system would not
be worth one semester course. It would have to be
supplemented by a one-hour independent study
course. Two three-hour courses on a quarter
system would be worth slightly more than one
course in the MAC
program (4 semester credits).
Don't hesitate task if you are confused on this point.
Courses that will be considered
for transfer credit must meet several conditions:
1. The courses must be graduate-level courses completed at another accredited college or university 2. The courses must be worth the
equivalent of three semester hours
3. Courses must be consistent with the educational goals of
the MAC Program
4.
The courses must have been taken in the last six years and prior to
admission into the MAC
Program
5. Grades lower
than "B" cannot be
considered for transfer credit.
Your
application needs to include the following information:
- a completed Transfer
Hours Request form (click on this link for a copy of the
form to fill out on-line). Be sure to give the title of
the class taken at
the other
college or university and the MAC class for
which you wish to substitute the transferred class
- a clear statement of
whether the credits are quarter hour or
semester hours
(also part of the Transfer Hours Request form).
- a copy of the note/syllabi for
those classes.
(If you no longer have the note/syllabi, it may be
possible to substitute the catalog description of
the courses and a list of required text books.)
- a copy of an official
transcript (in addition to
the transcript already submitted for your
application to the MAC program
- any other papers or
supporting
documentation
that you have
available and that might help the
MAC faculty in their decision.
(Remember, you're
trying to sell this!)
