MAC Class Notebook:
Chapter 2:  Registration and Pre-registration

Some 100 students enroll in two or three classes each out of their choice of some dozen classes offered each semester.  Even then, many of them later change their minds and want to modify their classes!  So the process of registration becomes a complex and very time consuming one for us.

We continue to expend a lot of effort trying to streamline this process.  The following discussion outlines the current procedures (as of this writing) for pre-registration in the MAC Program.

Pre-registration for Senior Students

Officially, students may register for any class at Saint Martin's University during the first week of each semester. In practice, few students wait that long. For one thing, most MAC graduate classes are full and closed by the time classes begin. For another thing, most people need more planning time and like to get their "ducks in a row" long before the week that classes actually begin.

To help avoid the many problems inherent in registering during the first week of the semester, the MAC program has developed a simply pre-registration process that allows students to enroll early.

The official pre-registration period for summer and fall semesters usually takes place in April.  The pre-registration period for the spring semester occurs in the middle of October.

Sometime in these time periods, MAC students are invited to pre-register either in person or by mail. The process begins by the Administrative Assistant distributing blank, pre-registration forms. These forms will either be distributed in MAC classes or through the mail.

Make sure the MAC office has your current physical and email addresses.  If we need to contact you for pre-registration, it is your interest to make that as easy as possible.

Senior students (defined as those who have been granted, degree candidate status) will register the week prior to junior students. This seems only fair since these students have been in the MAC Program the longest and therefore would have less chance of taking the class in a later semester if it were full when they tried to sign up.

After their deadline, the senior students lose their preferential advantage (although they may still pre-register until the pre-registration period closes). At that time, the MAC pre-registration opens up to all new and current students. Following the pre-registration period, no-one may sign up for any classes until the registration period begins. That takes place just before classes begin and during the first week of each semester. Typically the majority of MAC classes are already closed by that time. Senior MAC students may register for any open classes at that time, of course, but they have no preference over anyone else.

There's one last thing to talk about. Students often sign up for a class during pre-registration or registration period and then change their minds for some reason. Students may only add/drop during these two periods and senior students have no selection advantage outside of their brief "head start." So, if they have to change a class, even for some outstanding reason, they will not have the right to "bump" another student.

Pre-registration for Returning and New Students

Pre-registration for returning students (who have not yet applied for Candidate Status) will register in exactly the same manner as senior students. The only difference is that their forms will be distributed approximately one-week after they have been distributed to senior students.

Returning students will have an implicit priority over brand new students although, generally, returning and new students are not trying to get into the same classes.

The Schedule of MAC Classes can be viewed and/or printed off using your web browser.

Registration Validation

The final step for all three categories of students is an important one. You will need to contact the SMU Student Accounts Office (360-438-4389) in order to validate your registration (in other words, make arrangements to pay your tuition and fees). You don't necessarily need to actually pay at this time, but only to make arrangements using one of the approved finance plans.

Each semester, there are number of MAC students whose registrations are actually dropped by Saint Martin's University because of failure to validate with the Student Accounts Office. This is not difficult to correct, however, a $50 fee will be assessed to your account if this occurs. You pay enough for tuition; don't pour any money down the drain!
