Internship Quiz:
   What are You Looking For?

This quiz will give you an idea of the types of internships that match your interests and needs. First, click here to print out an answer sheet.  Then, answer the questions below (selecting from the choices on the left).  As you see the same letters being chosen again and again, you'll form a clearer picture of the kinds of internship sites to pursue more seriously.

INTERNSHIP "QUIZ"

1. Since your original reasons for enrolling may be a good guideline for considering possible internships, first think about why you decided to attend graduate school in counseling psychology.  What kind of agency/site did you imagine working in?  Select from the letters on the left and write the letter or letters down on your paper.

2. Professionally, where do you expect to be five years from now? (This is something to think about carefully since your internship will determine your professional identity for the next 3 to 5 years.)  Again, choose from the letters on the left.

3. Recognizing that every intern would like a paid internship but that few agencies are able to offer one, how important is reimbursement to you?

  • Essential; can't do an internship without it (select any of E & J to the left and write the letter(s) on your paper)

  • Would be nice! but not a deciding factor (select any of A to P)

4. In what type of environment would you most like to work?

  • In-patient setting (select any of A, K, L, N, P)

  • Intensive out-patient (B, F, J, K, O)

  • In a traditional counseling office (C, D, M, N, O)

  • In the client's own home (H, J)

5. Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a therapy team?

  • Prefer to work alone (H, I, J, M)

  • Prefer to work with a team (A to G, K to P)

6. When do you wish to collect internship hours?

  • Evenings and weekends (A to C, L, N to P)

  • Weekdays only (A to N, P)

7. Which presenting problems, modalities, or clientele do you prefer?

  • Conduct Disordered Adol/Juv. Delinquent (A to C, G, J to M)

  • Aging/Death & Dying (D, F, L, O)

  • ACoA/Co-dependency (A to E, J, N, P)

  • Adoption/Foster Care (E, I)

  • Anger Managment/Impulse Control (A to F, H to M)

  • Career/School Counseling (C to F, K, M)

  • Child Abuse/Domestic Violence (D, H to J, L, N, P)

  • Chemical Dependency (Drug/Alcohol) (A to C, E, K)

  • Corrections/Courts (A, B, D, K, L)

  • Crisis Intervention/Hot Line (D, H, J, L, P)

  • DD/Chronic Mentally Ill/Adult Day Care (D to F, L, O)

  • Group Work/Group Process (A to D, F, L, P)

  • High Functioning, but Stuck (B, C, J, N, M)

  • Individual Counseling (A to I, K to P)

  • Marriage and Family Therapy/Systems (C, D, E, J, N)

  • Physically Handicapped/Disabled (D,F, G, L, O)

Now, look at your answers on your sheet to see which letters appear the most often.  This should be a good guide to use in deciding on possible internship sites.
