The MAC Alumni Handbook:
Chapter 8:  The continuing education requirement

What are CEU's?

The State of Washington currently requires continuing education for all mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists.

Licensed counselors must complete 36 clock hours of continuing education every two years.  At least six of the thirty-six hours must be in professional ethics and law.

This requirement of 36 continuing education units ("CEU's") translates to two weekend workshops per year. There are several options available to obtain these 36 hours.

One option may be to audit an elective course from the MAC program. MAC classes typically require 36 clock hours of meeting time so that auditing one elective every two years may fulfill the DOH continuing education requirement.

A second option is that the MAC faculty could offer weekend workshops (either Friday night and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday) in areas of interest and expertise. For example, Peggy Zorn could offer weekend workshops on such topics as eating disorders, sandtray therapy with children, and so on. Leticia Nieto could offer weekend workshops on dynamic role-plays and therapy with theater. Godfrey Ellis could offer workshops on updates to the newest edition of the DSM or on counseling ethics and Washington State law. Our adjunct faculty may be able to do the same and some of the MAC alumni may be interested in doing the same.

We will provide more information about these kinds of opportunities as we here more details about the new DOH requirement.

A third option is the many professional presentations and workshops offered throughout Washington each year. National speakers come to our area frequently and area hospitals and state associations sponsor workshops several times each year. It is likely that such offerings will increase once the State imposes their continuing education requirement. Most of those presentations are "for-profit" and may be expensive, but there are frequently bargains for the discerning alumni.
