Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Informal interviewing of children to find their background information.
  • Interview prospective big brothers and big sisters to match their personalities and interests of the children needing the emotional support.
  • Interact with the children during activities in order to form trust bond relationships.

Duties: Since CYS Drop-In Center is a place for disenfranchised and homeless youth to come and get assistance in meeting their needs (food, clothing, safety, shelter, emotional and intellectual growth, and individualism), interns will provide advocacy, guidance, crisis intervention, and referral information to homeless youth ages 12-21.

The intern would also:

  • Develop linkages with community agencies as a means to coordinate services.
  • Participate in planning activities in order to engage homeless youth.
  • Provide services that expedite the meeting of contract requirements and program outcomes.
  • Participate in project, meetings, and training.
  • Participate in a workplace that values diversity and is free of all discriminatory practices.
  • Demonstrate open communications, teamwork, and documentation abilities.
  • Prepare cases, and do other work as assigned.

Requirements: The intern needs to have experience working with sexual and ethnic minority youth, have good communication skills (over phone too), be open minded, be able to work with the youth and their families, be able to work in diverse groups, abide by confidentiality policies, and be creative and flexible. Depending on what the intern does, he/she would have to: (1) participate in the drop-in room hours at least once a week and in community events as an advocate for homeless, at risk, and disadvantage youth, (2) complete the 6 hour new volunteer training, volunteer at least 3 hours a week, and sit in on at least one Community Accountability Board Session.

Duties and Responsibilities: Classroom Aide to special needs children with behavioral problems and to help their families meet their child’s education needs. Two interns at one time can sign up for this internship.

Duties and responsibilities: Teacher’s aide for special needs children. Student intern will learn how to teach special needs children, using their creativity in adapting classroom lessons to fit the child’s learning ability. The student intern will also provide emotional support, in order for the children to gain their trust so that learning will occur.
