Shkurkin's academic interests include the study of effective treatment modalities for complex PTSD, and collaborating internationally with social work educators, especially in Russia and Latvia.

Dr. Taylor worked as a clinical social worker and director of a hospital adolescent program and as family preservation social worker. Her teaching and research interests include issues of grief and loss, ethics, and feminist theory.
