Women's studies minor
The women’s studies minor is a multidisciplinary program which examines
the roles of gender and culture in society with particular emphasis on
women’s experience, perspectives and women’s lives.
Course
work includes scholarship by and/or about women in literature, the arts,
history, science, politics and other relevant areas of study. It also
analyzes the experiences of women with respect to social, psychological,
cultural, and biological factors. It examines the construction and
representations of gender in many fields of study.
The women’s studies minor is a good complement to many majors here at
the university and supports majors in the humanities, social sciences,
sciences, business, and education. Currently, students pursuing a minor
in women’s studies are involved in a wide range of majors including
biology, community services, criminal justice, English, history,
humanities, political science, psychology and sociology. The women’s
studies minor provides an important perspective for students interested
in pre-law, pre-med, public policy and service, and graduate training in
psychology.
The
women’s studies minor can enhance your career preparation. The
multidisciplinary focus requires the development of critical thinking
skills important in problem solving and analysis. The program includes a
focus on developing solid communication skills in both speaking and
writing. The emphasis on diversity, including both gender and culture,
provides the student with important perspectives on working in today’s
global economy.
