Robert A. Harvie Social Justice Lecture Series

Lacey, Washington—Students from the Women’s Studies
Department of Saint Martin’s University, with the support of
adjunct professor Teresa Marbut, will explore the impact of
agribusiness and capitalist corporations on women and children
in Third World and developing countries in an upcoming Robert A.
Harvie Social Justice Lecture. The lecture, “Buying Hope:
Women’s Rights and Sustainable Living in the Age of Agribusiness
and Corporate Greed,” begins at 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 6, in
Harned Hall, room 110, on the Saint Martin’s University campus,
5000 Abbey Way, Lacey, Washington, 98503. The free event is open
to the public.
Marbut, an ecofeminist philosopher who has dedicated her life
to the whole foods and fair trade movements, holds a master’s
degree in theological studies from George Fox University. She
will complete her doctoral degree in religion and philosophy
from the California Institute of Integral Studies this summer.
The lecture will consist of student presentations on ethical
alternatives to buying products that create a disparity in
workers’ income potential. It also will highlight global
grassroots efforts seeking to support workers, including women,
and fair-trade initiatives that stimulate an environmentally
friendly and sustainable future for both producers and
consumers. Refreshments prepared with fair trade-certified goods
will be provided. Also featured in the presentation will be a
display of other fair trade products and a demonstration on ways
to find fair trade goods throughout Washington. Student

The Robert A. Harvie Social Justice Lecture Series, now in
its sixth year, was created by Saint Martin’s University
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Robert Hauhart, Ph.D.,
J.D., chair of the University’s Department of Society and Social
Justice, to raise awareness of social justice issues within the
community and to honor the work of Robert A. Harvie, J.D.,
former professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice
at Saint Martin’s.
