Science? Math? Computer Science? You’ve found the right place!
The science
and mathematics division of Saint Martin's University will prepare you well for a career in any of our
four major programs. Half of
our faculty are winners of the annual teaching excellence award! We emphasize critical analysis skills, logical problem solving, and
collaborative work skills.
Biology is
our largest degree program and has grown significantly over the past few
years. Our graduates are well prepared for careers in medicine, research,
or field biology. Dr. Steven
Fulton brings his medical expertise to our students while
Dr. Mary Jo Hartman's specialty is in environmental and marine biology.
Dr. Margaret Olney teaches a variety of biology courses
including genetics, microbiology and botany.
TJ Underwood instructs
many of the labs which accompany the lectures.
Dr. Olney and
Dr. Hartman guide the seniors through Senior
Seminar where they design a bona fide research project, carry it out, and
produce results that are presented to the entire Saint Martin's community. Most students join Tri Beta, an international organization of
biology students and faculty. There is also a Biology Club in which
many participate.
Our
chemistry department works closely with the biology program to coordinate
classes and services. All
students in chemistry have the opportunity to engage in original research
under the supervision of
Dr. Greg Milligan who joined our faculty this
year.
Dr.
Darrell Axtell, specializes in general and inorganic
chemistry and offers lab experiences that are both relevant and fun!
TJ Underwood instructs
some of the lab courses which accompany the lectures.
Saint
Martin’s University's mathematics
department offers both B.S. and B.A. degrees through small and innovative
classes covering a broad range of mathematical topics.
Dr. KatherIne Porter is dean
of the division and and teaches in the math department. If you have a
talent in music, you will be welcomed by both Dr. Lee Mohler and
Professor Joe Mailhot to participate in occasional jazz
events. We are pleased that we have added an additional member to
the department,
Dr. Carol
Overdeep, who will teach a variety of math courses.
Computer
science is a popular major here also.
Many of our graduates are employed in leadership positions at
Microsoft, Intel, and various state agencies.
Our program provides students with analysis and design skills using
a variety of languages and problem-solving techniques.
Dr. Kyu Lee
is the chairman of the department. We welcome
Dr.
Sheryl Shulman who will be teaching in the department to help
meet the demand for courses in the computer sciences at Saint Martin's
University. John Staneff works late afternoons to help accommodate the needs of many of our
students who work full-time.
Our physics
department offers support courses for various other degree programs, but
we do not offer a degree in physics.
Carl Manning works closely
with students of engineering and the sciences to prepare them for the
demands of their disciplines.
Assisting all of the lab sciences is
Cheryl Guglielmo, our lab
manager.
Please see the program pages for further information
about any of these departments. You may also contact Sharon Sullivan,
Administrative assistant at 360-438-4512.
