    • Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals
    • Number of pages: greater than 6
    • NB Do not check "full text."

Find statistics

On the web

  • Statistics guide--this guide developed by Saint Martin's Alita Pierson is your best starting point for finding statics related to a wide variety of topics.
  • Statistical Abstract--"the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States."
  • FedStats--access to official statistical information produced by federal agencies.
  • CQ Researcher Full-text reports and analysis of current events, with topics such as health, social trends, criminal justice, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the economy. Limited to five (5) simultaneous users.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library--Source for specialized encyclopedias on business, education, the social sciences, and more.
  • Google--try limiting to government sites. For example, to find official statistics on consumer spending, try:  consumer spending and statistics and site:gov

In print reference books

HN90.P8 G35 The Gallup Poll (2008)
HA202.A36 Statistical Abstract of the United States (2010)-- current version available online
HC101.A13122 Business Statistics of the United States (2009)
G122.U56a The World Factbook (2009) -- current version available online

Note that while many these books can point you to relevant statistics, they may be somewhat dated. If that is the case, look for the original source of the statistics and see if a current report is available. Try Fedstats or Google to search for more recent online statistics.

Statistics in books or journal articles

Many scholarly articles and books will include tables, graphs, and other statistical information, which you may use in your assignment. For older articles, identify the original source of the statistics and see if a current report is available.  Try Fedstats or Google to search for more recent online statistics.
