Crashes

How do I restart my computer?

  • if it's a Mac Classic or SE, press the restart button on the left side of the machine. If it's an LC, Power Macintosh, etc otherwise press the Control key, Command key and the large button with the triangle on it at the top of the keyboard, all at the same time. If this fails, then find the actual power button somewhere on the computer.

"Error Type ..."

  • Generally, all this means to the end user is that the computer crashed and has to be restarted.
  • If it happens continually, then try giving the application you are using more memory via Get Info

Other Problems

My machine is suddenly running too slow

  • Is "Calculate folder sizes" selected in the "Views" Control Panel? This will slow things down a lot
  • Has virtual memory just been turned on in the "Memory" Control Panel? This will slow things down
  • Are you running any applications in the background like disk defragmentation or automatic virus detection as this will also slow things down a bit?
  • RAMDoubler may slow things down a bit - as will DiskDoubler which is definitely not recommended because of the problems which occur if files become corrupt (there is NO way to get the data back)

Applications doing corrupt kind of things.

  • transfer the preferences file for the application (found in the preferences folder which is in the system folder.) into the trash. Then open the application up again.
  • letters appearing on the screen are different to the keyboard keys.

(e.g.. 'q' and 'w' are swapped.) This is usually because in the control panels the keyboard is set to a foreign keyboard. Reset it to US (not US 6) or Australian if available.

Letters just appearing on the screen

  • This is usually due to a screen saver generating characters. Select the screen saver from the control panel and check that no additional character strings are being generated.
