This is usually a corruption of an invisible system file called the Desktop. To REBUILD the desktop file, restart the computer WHILE HOLDING DOWN the Command and Option keys. Keep the keys pressed down through the startup sequence until you see a dialog box asking if you want to rebuild the desktop. Now let go of the keys and click OK. This will usually fix the problem.

**Tip: do a desktop rebuild once a month as preventive maintenance.**
