Masters Hooding Ceremony
Saturday, May 11, 2013
The Masters Hooding Ceremony is a morning prayer
service followed by the formal presentation of the
academic hood to all master degree candidates.
Masters Hooding Ceremony tickets
As space is limited in the Abbey Church, the Masters Hooding Ceremony is a
ticketed event. Each master degree candidate who R.S.V.P'd receives
three tickets to distribute to friends and family. We regret that
we cannot make exceptions for entry to individuals without tickets.
Tickets can be picked up at the May 3rd
Graduation Fair or from May 6 to May 10 at the Office of the Registrar.
If you do not plan to use all your tickets, you may either share them with
other graduates or return them to the Office of the Registrar for
redistribution. Tickets returned to the Office of the Registrar will be
released on a limited, equitable basis to other candidates during the May
3rd Graduation Fair.
All degree candidates are to wear their gowns for the
hooding ceremony. It is best not to wear your cap, as it
interferes with the hooding. Please come dressed in your
gown, as changing rooms are not available.
All graduates should meet at the Abbey Church Courtyard
at 8:45 a.m. In the event of rain, graduates will meet
on the second floor of Old Main. The processional into
the church will begin at 9:25 a.m. Graduates will line
up by degree, alphabetically. Volunteer ushers will
direct you into seats and organize the recessional.
Receiving the hood
The hood is the colorful standard bearer of academic symbolism. The hood
reveals the level of the degree, the academic field of learning in which
the degree was earned, and the institution that conferred the degree.
Hoods earned at Saint Martin's are lined in red and
white, the school colors.
The hood will be draped over each graduate's head. A
graduate who chooses to wear his or cap may need to
remove it before receiving the hood, if the cap is not
secured to his or her head.
All graduates and their guests are welcome to attend a continental breakfast
reception located on the tented campus lawn west of the Grand Staircase,
immediately following the ceremony.
