Sacred Heart statue

Atop the Grand Staircase is a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The statue’s location is appropriate since, according to tradition, the beggar with whom St. Martin shared his cloak appeared to Martin in a vision as Christ himself. On the base of the statue is an inscription from the gospel of Matthew, “Come to me all you that labor and are burdened and I will refresh you.”
