Our
tour begins at the base of the Grand Staircase, where visitors to Old
Main first encounter this marble frieze. The work depicts Saint Martin
of Tours dismounted from his cavalry horse in the act of splitting his
cloak to share with a beggar. St. Martin lived a life of humility and
compassion and is the patron of the Abbey and the University.
