The Annunciation icon

To the right of the entrance, opposite the carving of Saint Martin, is this Russian Orthodox icon. Dating to the late seventeenth century, the icon depicts the Annunciation, when Mary accepted God’s call, brought to her by an angel, to be the mother of Christ. In the Catholic tradition, icons call to mind holy events and people and are often objects of meditation and prayer.
